Difference between Damp Ratings and Wet Ratings

Shopping for an outdoor fan can be a difficult task for many, especially if one is not familiar with the different kinds of fans available in the market. Damp rated and wet rated fans are one such kind of product. Most indoor fans are dry rated fans that easily become damaged when exposed to harsh temperatures. While, damp rated or wet rated fans are safe for outdoor use.

There are many outdoor fans that are suitable for locations that are damp or covered outdoor areas. A damp rated ceiling fan can ensure years of trouble free operation, even if installed in humid temperatures or locations situated near the oceans where salt could be a problem. However, though damp rated fans are made to handle certain temperatures, they should never be in direct contact.

Although, damp rated fans ensure trouble free operations, it requires regular cleaning and maintenance due to its exposure to moisture. You just cannot get it installed and forget about it! Regardless of the blades and motor of the fan, if not cleaned and maintained well, the fan will oxidize and corrode.

  1. This is really cool. I knew I could put a fan on a covered deck, but I had no idea I could install one out where it could get wet. Now I see outdoor fans come in damp rated and wet rated. I’ve been needing one for my pergola, so I’m getting one this spring.
